"The Happy Couple"

August 24, 2018; Place Poem

The house is perfect, all brick and wood paneling

The picket fence is flawless, white and shiny

The “for sale” sign is welcoming, yet warning

Neighbors think the happy couple is lovely

The happy couple removes the sign,

Paints the walls a shade of green

A happy announcement is made in time

Their baby’s smile gleams

The yard is beautiful, manicured and clipped

They notice the white mushrooms first

The ground dips, a brighter green where it sits

The happy couple ignores the curse

The azalea's crop up next, still in that same green spot

They don’t cause any trouble, just smile, and wave

All yellow and cheerful above what is not

The happy couple finds the grave
